What Are Google AI Overviews? And How Do You Get Your Wix Site Into Them?
You might have noticed something different when searching on Google recently. Instead of immediately seeing a list of websites, you're increasingly being shown an AI-generated answer at the top of the results.
These are called Google AI Overviews, and they're changing how people discover businesses, research services and find answers online.
For UK business owners, this raises an important question: If Google is answering customers' questions before they even visit a website, how do you make sure your business is part of that answer?
The good news? You don't need an entirely new website or an expensive platform to take advantage of AI search.
If your website is built using Wix or Wix Studio, there are practical improvements you can make to help Google discover, understand and potentially reference your content.
Let's look at how it works.
What are Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear within Google Search results.
Rather than simply displaying a list of websites, Google can pull together information from multiple sources to create an answer to someone's question.
For example, imagine someone searches:
"Is Wix a good platform for a small business website in the UK?"
Instead of visiting five different websites to find the answer, they might receive an AI Overview explaining the benefits, limitations and key things to consider.
Google can also display links to websites that support the information in its response.
This creates an opportunity for businesses.
If Google considers your website a useful source of information, your content could be featured or linked within an AI-generated answer.
For a smaller business, that could mean gaining visibility alongside much larger, more established competitors.
However, appearing in an AI Overview isn't guaranteed, and the websites Google references can vary depending on the search.
Why should UK businesses care about AI Overviews?
Traditional SEO has largely focused on getting your website onto the first page of Google.
That still matters, but search behaviour is evolving.
Customers are increasingly asking detailed questions rather than typing short keywords.
For example:
"Who offers Wix SEO services for small businesses in Manchester?"
"How much does it cost to redesign a Wix website in the UK?"
"Is Wix Studio better than Wix Editor for SEO?"
"What's the best website platform for a small business?"
These are exactly the kinds of questions where AI-generated search experiences can become useful.
And here's the important part: your business doesn't necessarily need to be the biggest in its industry to contribute useful information.
A well-written, genuinely helpful page that answers a specific question can provide value that a generic homepage doesn't.
There's also a challenge, though. Some people may get the information they need directly from Google's summary without clicking through to a website.
That's why businesses need to think beyond simply attracting website visits.
They need to build a recognisable, trustworthy online presence.
How does Google decide which websites to reference?
Google doesn't publish a simple checklist that guarantees your website will be cited in an AI Overview.
Its AI features use existing Google Search systems to find and assess relevant information, sometimes running several related searches to build an answer.
However, Google's own guidance highlights several areas worth focusing on.
1. Experience, expertise and trust
Google uses the term E-E-A-T, which stands for:
Experience: Do you have genuine, first-hand experience of the subject?
Expertise: Does your content demonstrate appropriate knowledge?
Authoritativeness: Is your business recognised as a credible source?
Trustworthiness: Is your information accurate, transparent and reliable?
E-E-A-T is a framework for assessing content quality, rather than a single ranking score.
For example, a Wix specialist explaining how to improve a Wix website's SEO can offer more practical value than an anonymous article containing generic marketing advice.
This is why real examples, original insights, useful explanations and clear business information matter.
2. Clear, helpful website content
Google needs to understand what your pages are about.
Imagine you have a page promoting your website design services.
If the page contains little more than "We build beautiful websites", Google has very limited information to work with.
Now imagine that page explains:
What website design services you offer.
Who your services are suitable for.
Which platforms you specialise in.
How your design process works.
What customers can expect.
Frequently asked questions about pricing and timescales.
That second page provides considerably more useful information for customers and search engines.
3. Structured data and schema markup
Structured data is code that gives search engines additional information about your website.
It's commonly written using something called JSON-LD.
For example, structured data can describe your business, products, services or blog articles.
Wix supports JSON-LD structured data, and some page types already include it automatically.
However, it's important to understand that schema markup isn't a shortcut into Google AI Overviews.
Google has confirmed that no special AI Overview schema is required. Correct structured data can support your wider SEO, but adding it doesn't guarantee an AI citation.
4. A strong overall online presence
Your website isn't the only place Google can encounter information about your business.
Depending on your industry, useful supporting sources may include your Google Business Profile, reputable directories, reviews and relevant third-party websites.
For local UK businesses, accurate and consistent business details are particularly important.
The aim is to build a clear online identity that customers and search engines can recognise.
How to optimise your Wix website for Google AI Overviews
So, what can you actually do within Wix?
Here are seven practical improvements I'd recommend considering.
Step 1: Make sure Google can find and index your website
Before worrying about AI Overviews, check that Google can access your website.
Within Wix, review your page's SEO settings and make sure search engine indexing is enabled.
You can find these settings through your Wix dashboard under SEO & GEO → SEO Settings.
It's also worth connecting your website to Google Search Console.
Search Console allows you to check whether individual pages are indexed, investigate technical problems and see how your website performs in Google Search.
Why this matters: A page needs to be indexed and eligible to display a search snippet before it can qualify as a supporting link in Google's AI features.
If Google cannot access your page properly, improving the wording alone won't solve the problem.
Step 2: Start answering real customer questions
One of the simplest ways to improve your content is to think about the questions customers ask before buying your product or service.
For example, if you run a landscaping business, potential customers might search:
"How much does garden landscaping cost in Manchester?"
Instead of only having a page called "Landscaping Services", you could create a useful article explaining the different factors that affect pricing.
You might cover garden size, materials, accessibility, preparation work and the type of landscaping required.
The goal isn't to fill your website with hundreds of repetitive questions.
It's to provide useful answers based on what you genuinely know.
My recommendation: Start with five to ten questions that regularly come up in customer enquiries, emails or consultations.
These are often some of the best starting points for new website content.
Step 3: Add a clear summary paragraph near the top of important pages
This is a particularly useful content-writing technique.
When someone visits your website, they should quickly understand what the page is about.
A short, direct paragraph below the main heading can help.
For example, imagine you're writing a page about Wix SEO.
Less helpful:
"Take your online presence to the next level with our innovative digital solutions designed to maximise your business potential."
It sounds impressive, but what does it actually mean?
More helpful:
"Wix SEO is the process of improving a Wix website so search engines can better understand its content. It includes optimising page titles, headings, website structure, internal links and technical settings to help relevant pages appear in Google Search."
The second example gives readers a useful explanation immediately.
It also provides search engines with clear context.
You don't need to write in a robotic way or repeat the same keywords throughout the page.
Simply answer the main question early, then use the rest of the page to explain it in more detail.
Google doesn't require a particular paragraph length or format for AI Overviews, but this approach makes your content more useful and easier to navigate.
Step 4: Organise your Wix pages using clear headings
Your website headings aren't just there to make a page look attractive.
They help communicate how the information is organised.
For example, a Wix SEO service page might use:
H1: Wix SEO Services for UK Businesses
H2: What Is Wix SEO?
H2: What Does Wix SEO Include?
H2: How Much Does Wix SEO Cost?
H2: Can Wix Websites Appear in Google AI Overviews?
H2: Frequently Asked Questions
Under each heading, provide information that answers the question or explains the topic.
Wix Editor and Wix Studio both allow you to assign heading tags to your text.
Ideally, each page should have one clear primary H1 heading, with additional headings organised logically.
This helps both visitors and search engines understand the information on the page.
Step 5: Review your structured data in Wix
Wix gives you the ability to add structured data without editing your website's underlying source code.
For a standard page, the process is generally:
Open the page's SEO settings in Wix Editor or Wix Studio.
Select Advanced SEO.
Find Structured Data Markup.
Select Add New Markup.
Add your correctly formatted JSON-LD code.
Apply your changes and publish the website.
Wix also includes preset structured data for certain features, including blog posts, Wix Stores products, Wix Bookings and Wix Events.
That means you shouldn't automatically add duplicate markup without checking what's already there.
For a business website, relevant structured data might include:
LocalBusiness for business information.
Organization for company details.
Article or BlogPosting for suitable articles.
Product for relevant ecommerce pages.
Always ensure the markup accurately describes information that genuinely appears on the page.
You can learn more through the official Wix structured data guide.
Step 6: Create useful FAQ sections
Frequently asked questions can be a valuable addition to service pages and blog articles.
They allow you to address specific concerns without overwhelming the main content.
For example, a Wix web design page could answer:
Can Wix websites appear in Google AI Overviews?
Yes. Wix websites can be eligible for Google's AI Overviews when their pages are indexed and meet Google's requirements for appearing in Search. There is no special submission process or guaranteed placement.
Do I need Wix Studio for better Google rankings?
No. Both Wix Editor and Wix Studio provide SEO tools. The quality of your website's content, structure, technical setup and overall user experience is more important than choosing one editor purely for SEO.
Does adding FAQ schema guarantee AI visibility?
No. FAQ structured data doesn't guarantee that Google will reference your website in an AI Overview.
In fact, Google discontinued its FAQ rich results feature in May 2026.
You can still include useful questions and answers on your website. The main value is in helping visitors understand your services, rather than expecting an additional search feature.
If you encounter FAQPage JSON-LD, it generally follows a question-and-answer structure like this:
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "FAQPage",
"mainEntity": [
{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "Can Wix websites appear in Google AI Overviews?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "Yes. Wix websites can be eligible when their pages meet Google's Search requirements."
}
}
]
}This is an illustrative example of structured data, not an AI Overview optimisation trick. The question and answer must also be visible on the webpage.
For most UK small businesses, I'd prioritise writing genuinely useful FAQs before worrying about adding FAQ-specific markup.
Step 7: Strengthen your website's credibility
Finally, look at your website from the perspective of someone who has never heard of your business.
Would they understand who you are and why they should trust you?
Some worthwhile improvements include:
Adding a detailed About page with genuine business information.
Introducing your team or professional experience.
Featuring authentic reviews and testimonials.
Publishing case studies or examples of completed projects.
Keeping your contact information and service details up to date.
Linking related pages and blog posts together.
For example, if you offer website design, explaining how you've improved an existing client's website is potentially much more useful than simply claiming to create excellent websites.
Original examples and real expertise give your content something meaningful to offer.
Can you guarantee that your Wix website will appear in an AI Overview?
No.
And I'd be cautious of any company promising guaranteed placement.
Google decides when to generate AI Overviews and which sources to reference. Results can change between searches and over time.
Even a well-optimised website may not appear for every relevant question.
What you can do is improve the foundations that make your website easier to discover and understand.
This includes good technical SEO, clear content, relevant business information and evidence of real expertise.
The objective should be sustainable search visibility, not chasing a supposed shortcut.
How can you check whether your website is appearing in AI search?
A useful starting point is to search Google for questions that your ideal customers would ask.
Try searches that combine your services, expertise and location.
Look at whether an AI Overview appears, which websites Google references and how thoroughly your own website answers that question.
You should also review Google Search Console's reporting for your website, including available generative AI performance data.
Remember that AI-generated responses can vary, so one manual search isn't proof that your website is consistently appearing or missing.
Monitor performance over time, including organic traffic, relevant enquiries and conversions.
Ultimately, being mentioned by AI is only valuable to your business if it contributes to awareness, trust or new customers.
What is GEO, and how is it different from SEO?
You may also have heard the term GEO, which stands for Generative Engine Optimisation.
GEO describes work focused on improving how websites and businesses are represented across AI-powered search experiences.
Traditional SEO focuses on making a website discoverable and useful within search engines.
GEO places additional attention on how clearly information can be understood, summarised and referenced in AI-generated answers.
In reality, the two overlap considerably.
Google itself considers the fundamentals of SEO just as important for its AI search features.
So rather than treating GEO as a replacement for SEO, it's better to think of it as an additional consideration within a modern search strategy.
For Wix websites, that means getting the basics right first, then improving the quality, clarity and usefulness of your content.
Is your Wix website ready for the future of Google Search?
Google Search is changing, but the fundamentals of a successful website remain remarkably consistent.
Your content needs to answer genuine questions, demonstrate expertise and make it easy for visitors to understand what you offer.
AI Overviews make those principles even more relevant.
And the encouraging news for Wix users is that many of the improvements we've discussed can be made directly within Wix Editor or Wix Studio.
You don't need to abandon your existing website.
You need a clear strategy for making it more useful, more discoverable and better prepared for the way people now search.
